"SIGNATURE COLLECTIONS"

I work in the copper foil method developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, who was an outstanding artist  of the American Art Deco movement.   (Art Deco, an art style born of resistance to the age of industrialization in the late 19th century, searched for an abstraction based on linear rhythms and decorative richness often evidenced by beautiful flat patterns.  Most of the abstractions and decorations had their origin in nature, particularly in plant form.)  Tiffany needed a way to manipulate flat glass into specialized forms, something virtually impossible with the traditional lead method of stained glass.  He developed a lighter, more flexible way to work with glass in copper foil.  This allowed for the elaborate sculptural designs of the lamps that carry his name to this day.

This same method allows me to create intricate designs resulting in large sculptural pieces for my “Signature Collections” - each piece unique and original. These collections are focused on the themes of Art Deco, fantasy art and Japanese culture. These sculptures often contain more than 300 separate pieces.

I begin with a sketch of the glass sculpture on paper, then transfer that sketch to pattern form.  Each of the glass pieces is then cut from glass sheets, ground to an accurate fit, individually foiled, and finally soldered together to form the sculpture.  After the main form has been established, I add the complementary pieces until the entire work is complete.  In building the beauty and harmony of the design, I have to incorporate technical considerations so that the sculpture will be structurally sound.  After assembling the sculpture, I do a final cleaning and polishing before hand painting the details.  The finished sculptures represent hundreds of hours of work, from the first sketches to their final forms.

The Limited Edition pieces are less complex and contain fewer pieces.  Because of this, I can produce more than one of each design with small differences to preserve the uniqueness of  the designs.
