These are fashioned after the Japanese Origami Paper Crane which has been in existence for hundreds of years.  The origami crane represents Japan’s Red-crowned Crane which is a symbol of eternal youth, happiness and good luck.  Through its long and cherished history, the crane, like the sun and the chrysanthemum, has become a national emblem of Japan. Japan’s aboriginal people, the Ainu, called these princely creatures “the marsh gods”.  Thought to be divine, the Crane seems to hold the secret of almost boundless life.  In folk tale the Japanese imagined that cranes lived a thousand years.

                                                 “Cool seascape with crane
                                                        Wading long-legged in the pools

Mid the Tideway dunes.”
                                                                                       Basho (Wanderer/Poet)  Haiku, 17th century.

Cranes are monogamous, devoted mates paired for life, sharing domestic tasks equally.  Their dedication to their mates has come to represent marital fidelity and love.  The gift of the crane wishes a long life and a happy marriage.  The cranes extend this dedication and caring to their  offspring who are pampered and reared with vigilant concern.

The gift of the crane wishes for the receiver a long and happy life, a happy marriage and much good luck through the years.
